TODAY psychologist Jo Lamble joined the team to discuss how to stop your kids from swearing.
WHERE DO YOUNG CHILDREN PICK UP SWEAR WORDS?
Children can pick up swear words from a variety of places, from school, family and friends.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN YOUR CHILD SWEARS, HOW SHOULD YOU REACT?
Try not to laugh or get angry, as that will probably lead your child to start using the word more. You should forgive your child and calmly explain why they shouldn't be using that word.
WHAT ARE THE BEST WAYS TO PREVENT YOUR CHILD FROM SWEARING?
The best way is to try not to swear yourself, but you should also admit when you slip up.
Calmly ask them if they know the meaning of the word and if they don't, then explain why it would offend someone and why the child shouldn't use it.
Parents should also help them find other words to use to express their frustration.
WHAT ABOUT PUNISHMENTS?
A punishment should be a last resort, it's best to explain why they shouldn't say it and then if they continue to swear, then a punishment may need to be introduced. You don't want to over-punish children, possibly a swear jar could be introduced as an option.
